July 13, 1929-February 18, 2013
Fritz Gruber passed away at the Drayton Valley Hospital on February 18, 2013 and the age of 83 years.
Fritz was born in St. Johann, Hungary on July 13, 1929. He came to Canada from Germany in 1954 with his wife, Erna, where he enjoyed a happy and fruitful life first in Edmonton where he started out as a labourer, and then a proprietor of a plastering company. He then tried his hand at farming in Tomahawk before settling in Drayton Valley in 1976 where he started Gruber Construction. He will be remembered as a man with tremendous strength of character and a generous spirit. He captivated us with his ability to tell the stories of his life. Above all else, Fritz loved his family. He was passionate about building, his German heritage, travel, horseback riding and, in his younger days, his motorcycle. He will be dearly missed by his family.
Fritz was predeceased by his parents Martin and Anna Gruber, and by his brothers Martin, Stefan and Franz.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years. They were married in Weisenbach, Germany on November 21, 1953.
Fritz is lovingly remembered by his son Fred of Tomahawk and his daughters Anna (Al) and Colleen (Bernie), his son Frank (Barb) of Tomahawk and their daughters Lisa (Luke), Angela (Kerri) and Stephanie and his daughter Monica of Drayton Valley and her daughters Brittany and Jessica (Ethan) along with two precious great grandchildren, Juliana and Lucas. Also surviving are his sisters Anna, Elisabeth, Maria and Julia along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and due to our mother’s illness, a committal service will be held at the Riverview Cemetery at a later date with Pastor Brummett officiating.
It is our family’s wish to give back to the community that Fritz loved so much. A public dedication ceremony in his honor will be held at a date to be announced.
If friends so desire, memorial donations in Fritz’s memory may be made to the Drayton Valley Community Foundation Box 6837, Drayton Valley, Alberta T7A 1A1
