Merna Esther Nelson
September 26th, 1936 – May 17th, 2019
It is with great sadness, but very cherished memories, that the family announces the passing of their beloved mother, Merna on May 17, 2019 at the age of 82 years. She passed peacefully at her daughter’s home in Edmonton with family by her side.
Merna will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her four children, Scott, Ritchie (Vicky), Jeff (Diane) and Dawn (Kevin); and her six grandchildren, Brittany, Jordan, Curtis, Justin, Tierney and Riley. Also missing her is her brother Raymond Cook and his wife Gail along with numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Merna was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Lorne, in 2005.
Her life was enjoyed immensely with many years traveling on the road with Lorne and visiting family and friends everywhere they went. She kept up this tradition on her own after Dad passed, by continuing to travel south for the winters and touring around in a camper van the rest of the year. Merna was the keeper of family memories as a very avid genealogist. Her passion was to ensure that no “stone was left unturned” (headstone, that is). Family history and passing down that knowledge was her greatest legacy, next to her family and friends.
Merna’s family would like to pass along our deepest gratitude to all the Home Care attendants, Hodan, Jessica and Lem Lem along with our Palliative Care Case Nurse, Danessa for all their help, support and gentle care they provided Mom over the last few months.
Also a special thanks to Dr. Barton who gave us all the tools and knowledge to care for Mom at home and the understanding of what to expect along Mom’s final journey.
To respect Merna’s wishes, a simple and intimate graveside interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery at 2 pm on Saturday, May 25, 2019.
Memorial donations may be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, 800-8215-112 St., Edmonton, AB T6G 9Z9 or the charity of your choice in Merna’s name.
