Michael (Mike) William Roy Heyland
May 21st, 1945 – July 4th, 2018
Michael William Roy Heyland (Mike), age 73, passed away on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at the Drayton Valley Hospital.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his son Devon Heyland and Devon’s significant other Hallie Nelson Jans, Devon’s children; Katie Heyland, DJ Heyland, Mikes daughter Tamara McDermit married to Rod McDermit and their children; Shayana McDermit (Buck Moen), Shalayne McDermit and Kyrell McDermit, sister Vicki Knudson, brother Boyd Heyland (Pam Heyland), several nieces and nephews and many close friends.
Mike was born and raised on a working cattle ranch in Claresholm, Alberta by his parents Errol and Kathleen Heyland, along with his siblings Vicki, Larry and Boyd. Mike spent his free time in the summer picking saskatoons and selling them by the quart for spending money.
Mike graduated from high school in Claresholm where he achieved grade 12 matriculation. He moved off the farm to Calgary where he spent 1 year in science at the University of Calgary. At this time he began to form what would become lifelong friendships with Wynn Hassett and Doug Carlson.
Mike fell in love and married Gail Gillette on March 9, 1968. Mike went to Mount Royal College and received his certificate as an Interior Design Assistant. Mike also includes in his list of accomplishments a degree in common sense at the school of experience and masters in ambition at the university of life. He spent many years of his life working in telecommunications, interior design, and the oilfield. He was co owner of a candle shop, a private alarm system company, manager of a condominium complex and readily pursued many other hobbies and passions that came his way.
Mike and Gail spent many years on an acreage raising cattle, horses and enjoying the country life. Following their divorce he continued to pursue his passion for animals, and raised some ostrich, as well as his own cattle and horses. Mike eventually settled to live the remainder of his life in Drayton Valley where he met his very true friend Reg Hamilton. He loved to listen to the Blues, and he loved to write, sing and publish his own music.
He will forever be remembered by his close friends for the time he spent at what he would call “the local watering hole” laughing and enjoying friendship with those he was close to.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Mike on July 9, 2018 at 3:00 pm at the Drayton Valley Legion.
