Laura Ellen Haggart (Westling)
May 20,1958 – Nov 16, 2020
With great sorrow we announce the passing of Laura Haggart at the young age of 62 years.
Laura’s was surrounded by a great number of family members. Her husband Edward Haggart, daughter Amanda Haggart (Trevor), son Steven Haggart (Layne) and grandchildren (Lucas, Halina, Serena, Will). Her Mother Norma Viola Westling and her brother Neil (Kathy) and a sister Val (Dennis), additionally, John Hunter (Katie) and daughters Emily and Elana were closely entwined in the fabric of her life. John joined the family some 17 years ago and has been here every step of the way since.
Laura was born in Breton, later moved to Drayton Valley and then finally to Alder Flats after marrying Edward Haggart in June of 1978. They moved to the family farm (or homestead at that time) in May of 1983 after Amanda was born in October of 1982, while living in Alder Flats. As the farm grew so did the family, when Steven was born in January of 1984. For anyone who knew Laura, she was a part of many different endeavours with work over her lifespan. She ran the skidder while logging, worked along-side her husband while fencing and in many different areas in the oilfield as the times and needs changed around Alder Flats. But Laura’s true passion was cutting meat in her butcher shop. In 1988 Laura began cutting on the farm, in an old family building moved from Eds fathers house in Alder Flats. Laura learned her trade while working in the butcher department in the Drayton Valley IGA and in 1992 she set up a cooler to be able to cut meat year-round. She had been helping hunters and local farmers process and sustain this farm fresh lifestyle for almost as many years as the farm had been running.
As the farm and family grew, Laura became a more active community member and volunteer, allowing her to be a greater part of Alder Flats and its people. She was able to assist and organize many different functions while holding the position of President in the Alder Flats Agricultural Society. However, this never stopped her from rolling up her sleeves and helping cook when she was needed at other community events. One of Laura’s great passions was curling, she enjoyed being a part, on and off of the ice, and helped plan as many bonspiels as she could. In 2016 she was able to get to win the Alder Flats Women’s Bonspiel along with her daughter Amanda, daughter in law Layne and Sheila Thebeau. Many years of being a part of the community and the curling dedication allowed her to reach this milestone.
A special thanks has to be put forward to the ALS Society. Without their support and the specialized equipment Laura needed it would have been nearly impossibly to provide the level of care and quality of life that she led at the end. A donation will be made to the ALS Society in Laura’s behalf, in order to support and assisted with others who have to make an equally difficult journey in the future.
